Address: Rutgers University, CAIP CenterMy main research interest is in the areas of speech and language processing and human-computer interaction. I am interested in both basic and applied research. The final goal of this research is to build intelligent computer agents that are able to interact with humans in a similar way humans interact with each other. Developing automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis systems only touches the periphery of these intelligent systems. Such systems need to be capable of learning new linguistic knowledge and adapting to new contexts and situations. They also need to exhibit reasoning capabilities and to express emotions. One way to approach such an ambitious goal is to study the equivalent processes performed by humans. Neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, and biology can provide significant insights to engineers and computer scientists for building such systems. Thus, my approach to speech science and technology is biologically-inspired and it is based on a 10-year research experience in biological signal processing. I also have a strong interest in human speech perception that includes a wide range of areas from psychology to neurophysiology. I am also interested in biomedical engineering research for building systems that can advance the diagnosis and therapy techniques and improve human health and life.
