CAIP’s vision statement regarding its focus on Cyberinfrastructure (CI) is very much inline with the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) mission in CI which is to:
- Develop a human-centered CI that is driven by science and engineering research and education opportunities;
- Provide the science and engineering communities with the access to world-class CI tools and services including those focused on: high performance computing, data analysis and visualization, networked resources and virtual organizations, learning and workforce development;
- Promote a CI that serves as an agent for broadening participation and strengthening the nation’s workforce in all areas of science and engineering;
- Provide a sustainable CI that is secure, efficient, reliable, accessible, usable, and interoperable, and that evolves as an essential national infrastructure for conducting science and engineering research and education
- Create a stable but extensible CI environment that enables the research and educates communities to contribute to the agency’s salutary mission.
This vision statement was published in The NSF report “Cyberinfrastructure Vision for 21st Century Discovery” at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf0728/nsf0728.pdf
CyberInfrastructure is important for the future, particularly in the following areas:
- Scientific Discovery - Discovering patterns in scientific data that may have been collected by sensors or entered into a database by information workers.
- Engineering, Design, Innovation, and Testing - Designing and testing large systems from multiple locations using measured data and simulated models to design and innovate in the design of automobiles, televisions, computers, bridges, buildings, ships, factories, etc
- Education - Asynchronous distance learning with multiple databases and question-answer datamining technology can be used for learning anytime, anyplace.
