Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) techniques can be classified into various categories based on the nature of the scheme, its geometrical orientation, and its approach to the domain of interest. The figure below shows a high-level taxonomy of existing partitioning/load-balancing approaches. Our focus has primarily been on domain-based techniques for SAMR applications which exhibit dynamic, global characteristics.
