Abstract:

There is general agreement within the I/T industry that the growing complexity of configuring and operating I/T systems requires that systems become more self-managing. Major industry vendors have put forward somewhat different visions of self-managing systems. These include HP's Adaptive Enterprise initiative, IBM's On Demand and Autonomic Computing initiatives, and Microsoft's Dynamic Systems initiative. What do these visions of self-management share in common, and how do they differ from one another? What are the most important challenges that face industry today and in the coming years? How can the academic community best focus its research efforts to address these challenges? Our panelists, who represent a broad set of views from industry and academia, will discuss and debate these and related questions during what is likely to be a lively 90 minute panel.
